U.S. Embassy Supports the Arts in San Miguel de Allende
Three very special festivals in delightful San Miguel de Allende recently received support from the U.S. Embassy.
At Expresión en Corto, the international short film festival celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the U.S. was the featured country. Public Affairs representative Julia Tully welcomed attendees in San Miguel on behalf of the U.S. Embassy, and Public Affairs Officer Lynn Roche invited the audience in Guanajuato to enjoy the spotlight on American films and directors. Ten decades of American cinema were highlighted with favorites such as Easy Rider, Psycho, and An American Werewolf in London taking center stage. Acclaimed American director Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and The Planet of the Apes) was honored and offered a Master Class when the festival moved to Guanajuato.
Other highlights of the festival included homage to beloved Mexican actress Josefina Echánove, three movie workshops for children, “Movies with Mummies” which took place in the local cemetery, and dozens of free screenings throughout the town.
The 29th Annual Chamber Music Festival of San Miguel is one of San Miguel’s premier cultural events, this year bringing eleven extraordinary concerts to Teatro Angela Peralta. The U.S. Embassy was delighted to support the appearance of Grammy-nominated Imani Winds, a wind ensemble with European, African, Latin American and American music traditions. Ed Clancy, San Miguel’s U.S. Consular Agent, was one of the principal organizers of the festival this year and we all appreciated his dedication to the arts and the community.
The Second International Theater Festival of San Miguel de Allende brought theater to outside spaces for the second year in San Miguel: street corners, public squares, bars, and restaurants. The U.S. Embassy sponsored the New York City group Lucidity Suitcase who performed Henry Five Live at the Allende Museum.
